Schmid (1991) described groups of plants that have the same basic structure and vary only in their leaf color. The cultivars listed are very similar to each other and some are probably identical i.e. the same plant but with a different name.

This group was defined as "Several mediovariegata (i.e. leaf center variegation) sports of H. 'Sieboldiana' have been found as mutations in the wild as well as in cultivation in Japan and in Western gardens. They occur in several sizes and vary from the species (now cultivar) only by the leaves which have irregular green margins with the leaf center being chartreuse, yellow, yellowish white, or white. Also included in this group are the center-variegated, streaked, and splashed cultivars..."
