This plant is mistakenly labeled 'John Vargo'.

An open-pollinated seedling of the species, H. nigrescens, this cultivar was registered by Henry Weissenberger of New York in 1986. It is an upright, medium size plant with deep red petioles. In July, purple flowers bloom on 3 foot tall scapes.

Seedlings include H. 'Ebony Spires'.
